What is MGO?

Marine gas oil (MGO) is a type of bunker fuel commonly used in marine vessels due to its ability to reduce emissions and comply with environmental regulations. Compared to heavier residual fuels, MGO is a vital component of modern maritime operations.

You may also hear it referred to as bunker fuel. This is an umbrella term and is used for fuels stored in a ship’s bunker or, more recently, fuel tank.

How does it work?

The production of MGO involves the distillation of crude oil, where components are separated based on their boiling points. This refining process removes impurities, resulting in the creation of cleaner and more efficient fuels, including kerosene, diesel, gasoline, marine fuel oil, and marine gas oil. During distillation, the various components of crude oil vaporise at different temperatures and then condense back into liquid form, ensuring the separation of high-quality fuels from less desirable elements.
